Prediction: Stylish French Women Will Rotate These 5 Classic Outfit Formulas Throughout 2025

Having lived in Paris for over a year, I can report that the rhetoric that French women have honed in on what makes an exceptional wardrobe is valid. Before moving to Paris, I consumed literature on the anatomy of a French wardrobe, studied the nuances and realised the versatility of French style but nothing beats stepping into the city and witnessing it first hand. From mundane trips to the supermarket to dressed-up evenings, there is plenty of fashion inspiration to soak up in the French capital.

Naturally, when January hits we're in full-on evaluation mode and this extends to our wardrobes and sense of style. As a fashion editor, one of my most asked questions is what constitutes a reliable wardrobe and as you'd imagine, my reference is French style for all the reasons above. Although style is entirely subjective and French style leans more towards minimalism, it highlights basic pieces every woman can benefit from.

For 2025, expect to see themes of a similar ilk—refinement, many neutral tones and the emphasis on quality craftsmanship with a slight nod to elegant anti-trend trends. We've witnessed the rise in burgundy hues, suede fabrications, and deep grey, for example, which are trend-led but classic pieces French women have inherited. If you're needing inspiration on how to elevate your wardrobe this year à la française, you've come to the right place. Below, you'll find five versatile outfits combinations approved by our favourite French tastemakers.

5 CLASSIC OUTFITS FRENCH WOMEN WILL WEAR ON ROTATION IN 2025:

1. Blazer + Tailored Trousers + Shoulder Bag

Style Notes: These separate elements are fundamental components in a French woman's wardrobe. Paired together, they constitute a well-rounded outfit you can transcend to most seasons. Now, for example, you'll require additional outerwear.

2. Car Coat + Straight Leg Jeans + Basket Bag

Style Notes: This look is particularly interesting as it speaks to versatility in the French style. Basket bags are commonly associated with summer months (it's an open weave, after all) however, Adenorah demonstrates that you can continue integrating summer elements with heavy-weight outerwear. It's one of my favourite references for French style, and the best way to squeeze the most wear out of your purchases. Keep an umbrella handy, to prepare for all eventualities.

3. Burgundy Trainers + Sweater + Cross Body Bag

Style Notes: Although French style loans itself to dressing up, there's space for casual outfits too. Case in point, trainers (specifically of the suede variety) awash with burgundy, one of the most fashionable hues of the season.

4. Grey Knitted Midi Skirt Co-Ord + Heeled Pumps

Style Notes: Understated and easy to wear, a knitted co-ord is minimum effort and maximum impact, especially if you follow Aida's lead and pair it with heels.

5. Mini Dress + Wool Coat + Knee High Boots

Style Notes: Opt for layers while it's still cold (read: baltic) outside. Knee-high boots and tights will ensure you can continue wearing short dresses year-round, a staple for French women. It's another example of maximising the pre-existing pieces in your wardrobe.
