I Asked My Fashion Friends Where They Buy Sweaters—They Said These 12 Brands
We all have that friend who is continually asked about what they're wearing. Whether they’re being stopped on the street or DMed on Instagram, they just have that knack of making us want to insert their outfits into our own wardrobes. One of the many occupational hazards of working in fashion is that I have *so many people* in my life who fit this criterion. Even aside from my fellow editors, I've ended up surrounded by stylish people who are forever wearing cool things—and because they're the best, they love nothing more than sharing where they shop.
Since it's that time of year when we're all hunting down chic sweaters, I hit up some of my fashion friends to share their go-to picks. From cardigans in trending colors to timeless cashmere, here are 12 brands they rely on when it comes to fall knitwear.
Libby Strachan, Brand Marketing Director at Free People
COS
"I recently got an amazing cashmere sweater that feels and looks like it's from The Row. The cuts and silhouettes of their sweaters are incredibly luxe, and there's a good price range of options. This first style is the sweater I bought." — Libby Strachan
Guest in Residence
"I own a few sweaters from Guest in Residence, and they've become true wardrobe staples. The colors and quality are great!" — Strachan
Free People
"Yes, I work for Free People, but I am constantly telling friends to buy our cashmere. It's super soft and lightweight with a great price point and can be worn year-round. I love this green color. (This is a mainstay style we've had for a few seasons.)" — Strachan
Alex DiCapo Patel, Director of Community and Partnerships at Argent and Editor of The Best Best Substack
American Vintage
"I have recently become obsessed with American Vintage. Their sweaters are truly so soft and cozy, while still maintaining elevated shapes and silhouettes. They come in many fun colors in addition to classic heather gray, black, navy, etc." — Alex DiCapo Patel
Alex Mill
"Alex Mill makes one of my favorite sweaters, The Button Back Crewneck. This may be my most-worn item in my closet, and for good reason! Perfect for travel because it's so versatile, as are all of their sweaters. You can hand-wash at home and style so many ways. I find their pieces very affordable for the quality. " — DiCapo Patel
Uniqlo
"Don't sleep on Uniqlo! Uniqlo has the best basics that are perfect for layering, styling, and wearing 100+ times. The perfect base piece for your fall outfits. You also can't beat the price point!" — DiCapo Patel
Robin Reetz, Brand Consultant and Co-Founder of In Haus
Donni
"Donni has perfected the casual look of '90s clothing all the way down to their knitwear. I love the styles and colors they offer. There's just something about Donni's sweaters and overall assortment that has this perfect, wear-every-day quality to it." — Robin Reetz
Sézane
"Sézane is all over the internet and for good reason. Their sweaters are great quality overall with really nice fabrics. Recommend!" — Reetz
&Daughter
"&Daughter kills the knitwear game—they have a large offering of sweaters in a variety of shapes, styles, and weights. I dare you to find something you don't want." — Reetz
Zeenat Wilkinson, Fashion Editor and Founder of Sauce
Extreme Cashmere
"As the name suggests, Extreme Cashmere is extremely snuggly and luxurious. This Amsterdam-based label does great classic styles in their 'one size fits all' model of operating. The brand is carried in 300 stores globally, and you can also shop on their website." — Zeenat Wilkenson
Marle
"The founder of this label, Juliet Bates, runs Marle's global business from a remote part of New Zealand. A key point of difference for this brand has always been on the emphasis on natural fibers and fabrics. Naturally their knits are just as special." — Wilkenson
Frisson Knits
"I didn't want to gatekeep this very cool ethical knitwear brand that's handcrafted in New Zealand and made with sustainably sourced mohair wool. These made-to-order woolen products make me look and feel like a snuggly Cavoodle." — Wilkenson
