8 Fall Runway Trends I'm Shopping Early and on Sale at Nordstrom

At last, Nordstrom's long-awaited Anniversary Sale is here, and while it's certainly tempting to only buy things that fit your exact needs right now, I want to challenge you to think ahead. As someone who has shopped this sale (and many, many others) for over a decade, I've made every discount-related mistake in the book. From said mistakes, though, I've learned the right way to approach them. The lesson I follow most is to go into sales with the following season in mind rather than the current one. That way, when you buy something, you have months to break it in instead of mere weeks.

Since the Anniversary Sale arrives at the tail end of summer, fall—often regarded as the best fashion season of all—is our primary focus. Fortunately for anyone needing a bit of inspiration before tackling its endless array of red-marked shelves and/or pages, there's no shortage of fall 2023 runway imagery to influence your purchases. Classic Denim

Rarely does everyone's favorite and most worn clothing item make it onto the runways. They're usually reserved for pieces of the louder variety. But this season was different, with brands like Bottega Veneta focusing their attention on wearable pieces, specifically classic denim.

White Button-Down Shirts

No item is spotted on the fashion crowd more often than a white button-down shirt—whether it's on a model on the runway, an editor outside of a show, or an influencer on Instagram. Luckily, Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale has plenty of them stocked and ready to fill our closets at a discounted rate.

Leather Jackets

Saint Laurent's leather bomber jackets were one of the stars of its F/W 23 show, but you don't have to pay thousands for an amazing piece of leather outerwear that'll give your wardrobe the same effect. In reality, you can achieve the same look right now for as low as $55 thanks to Nordstrom's sale.

The Color Red

Rarely does a color make as big of a splash across fashion month as bright red did during the fall/winter 2023 season. From Tory Burch to The Row, the vibrant shade was everywhere in the form of outerwear, dresses, bags, shoes, and more. The same goes for Nordstrom's sale selection, from chic sandals to elevated work totes.

Timeless Knits

Though many were too distracted by the underwear-with-tights combos that lined the runway at Miu Miu's F/W 23 show to notice them, classic knitwear was just as prevalent in the collection as anything else. Think turtlenecks, crew-necks, and cardigans, all of which can be found on sale right now at Nordstrom.

Trench Coats

In the fall, no outerwear item of mine gets more use than my trusty trench coat. This is why I wasn't at all surprised to see them on the runways for autumn, with the best of them arriving at The Row's show in Paris.

Hoodies

At Miu Miu and Ferragamo, hooded sweatshirts made a surprise splash, making us all forget that the sporty basic was ever considered boring or okay to pass over. With the right styling, even the simplest hoodies can be made chic.

Lace

Lace is one of those trends that always walk the delicate line between elegant and tacky, but the fall/winter 2023 collections proved that skipping it because of the risk of going over said line simply isn't an option. It just means you have to be picky about the lace pieces you invest in. Luckily, Nordstrom has plenty of buy-worthy items to choose from.
