I'm A Fashion Editor—5 Expensive-Looking Outfits I Can't Stop Thinking About
You might assume it’s impossible to find premium-looking clothing on the high street, but a clever cut, a rich colourway or a quality material blend is often all it takes for a piece to pass for designer. Winter is a costly time of year, fashion-wise. Coats, boots and chunky knits typically come with eye-watering price tags, so it’s more important than ever to shop smart and maximise your budget.
When sifting through the thousands of frugal buys out there, there are a few things you can do to develop a more discerning eye and filter out the clearly cheap pieces. Firstly, I suggest sticking to a colour palette of classic neutrals. Minimal designs always look the most expensive, in my opinion, and will help you tap into the "quiet luxury” trend that's everywhere this year. Look out for considered details like a wide sleeve, covered buttons or a pointed toe. This kind of seemingly small design choice will instantly add polish to your outfit.
Knee-high boots have been a particular saviour for me recently—slip them on with leggings and your favourite knit for a reliable winter look. I'm also convinced that gold-toned jewellery makes it seem like you've put in ten times more effort (without fail) and the addition of a wool coat will make you feel like you're dressed in luxury, too.
For more inspiration, keep scrolling to see five expensive-looking winter outfits I've assembled with affordable pieces from the high street. And yes, I've linked them below, so you can add them to your own wardrobe in no time.
1. Jeans and a Wool Coat
Style Notes: Denim? Check. Elevated shoe? Check? Wool? Check times two. This look isn't just incredibly polished and timeless, it's also sure to keep you warm.
Shop the look:
No need for a second piercing—you get two hoops in one with this pair.
The shape, the contrast colourway, the gold details... This might just be my perfect bag.
2. Simple Dress and Elevated Accessories
Style Notes: I love incorporating lighter tones into my winter looks to keep things from feeling too heavy. This COS shirt dress is a dream, especially paired with the croissant-shaped Mango bag.
Shop the look:
The cropped shape also works well with high-waisted trousers and skirts.
3. Simple Shapes and Leather Details
Style Notes: On casual days, don't underestimate your basics. A simple striped tee needs little more than a directional trouser and considered accessories to feel fashion-forward.
Shop the look:
Reach for this on casual Saturdays, mid-week errand runs, layer it under a blazer for work... The options are endless.
Easy to elevate with heels and a nice top or dress down with a sweatshirt and sneakers.
4. Knitted Separates and a Longline Coat
Style Notes: This is definitely my favourite look, so naturally, I've added each of its components to my wish list. It would be perfect for a smart lunch or a shopping day in the city.
Shop the look:
Aligne is singlehandedly transforming the high street with its sustainable designs.
5. Tailoring and Gold Accents
Style Notes: Massimo Dutti cardigans are popular for a reason. Toss this cream iteration on with wide-leg trousers and dressy accessories—and if you're feeling the chill, add a long coat to the formula.
Shop the look:
These boxy cardigans have become something of a signature of Massimo Dutti, and they historically sell down fast.
A beauty we return to time and time again.
These remind me of Toteme's Insta-famous ankle boots, but are a fraction of the price.
