Fashion Influencer Elle Ferguson Has The Best Acne-Blitzing Skincare Routine
Ever wish you could peek into the beauty cabinets of other women? Ask them about each and every product before you gather your notes and make a beeline for the nearest Mecca? We did too, hence our Real Women, Real Routines series. We’re shining a spotlight on actual women, and detailing the ins and outs of their personal skincare routines.
We asked all the questions, from their approach to skincare, to issues they’re dealing with, morning and evening beauty rituals, and the products they’ll keep buying forever.
In this week’s column, influencer, blogger and beauty entrepreneur Elle Ferguson (one half of the iconic style blog, They All Hate Us) so kindly walked us through every single step in her expertly-curated skincare routine. As a beauty boss in the making (surely you've heard of the Elle Effect by now?) and self-confessed skincare obsessive, hundreds (if not thousands) of products have seen the inside of her bathroom cabinet, so you know that her daily go-to's are seriously good.
Keep reading for all the skincare products an Australian influencer can't live without.
Byrdie Australia: What’s your approach to skincare?
Elle Ferguson: It has always been that skin health comes from within. I'm a firm believer that if you are eating healthily, taking the right supplements for your gut, exercising, and happy, that's when your skin will look its best. That, and always taking your make up off at the end of the day.
B: How do you go about choosing products?
EF: I've worked out that simple is best. My skin is very reactive, so I never use anything too harsh or strong as it upsets my complexion. I am also lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing woman in the beauty industry, and I always trust what they have to say when it comes to choosing new products.
B: Do you have any skincare issues you’re currently treating?
EF: I am prone to a good breakout every now and again, so I am actively having facials to try and overcome the congestion.
B: What skincare products do you buy over and over?
EF: I love the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes ($8), Skinstitut Glycolic Cleanser ($30) for a deep clean, and Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Cream ($125) is my daily go-to. I love the Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado ($44), and Venustus' Spot Treatment ($49) and Black Pelan Mud Mask ($69) keep my breakouts under control.
I also religiously buy Dr Bronner's Castile Soap in Peppermint ($20), and The Beauty Chef's Collagen Inner Beauty Boost ($40) is amazing.
B: Anything you would never use on your face?
EF: I try and use products that are as natural and organic as possible.
B: Walk us through your morning routine.
EF: In the morning I simply wash my face with warm water. After that, I apply Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Cream ($125) and follow it up with my Keihls Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado ($44). After my skincare (which is pretty simple), I apply my makeup. The last thing I do every single day is set everything with Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Mist ($70).
B: Walk us through your evening skincare routine.
EF: At night I shower and use Skinstitut Glycolic Cleanser ($30). Once I’m done, I’ll use a Neutrogena wipe ($8) to get rid of leftover makeup. I use my Venustus Pelan Black Mud Mask ($69) once a week while I eat dinner. I’ll remove it before I go to bed, and I always use Venustus Spot Treatment ($49) on any spots before I go to sleep.
B: Which experts do you look to for skin upkeep?
EF: The team at Venustus are amazing, I visit them all the time. I also love Melanie Grant in Double Bay, and Kristen Fisher always does my eyebrows.
