How the Co-Founder of Sakara Life Nourishes Her Body, Mind, and Soul at Night

It's no secret that we love a good morning routine. We've come to learn, however, that the rituals we do to wind down before bed are just as important. Whether you take 10 minutes or a few hours, it's precious time that you have set aside at the end of the day to take care of yourself. Our series Weekend Wind-Down highlights the nightly routines of the people we admire.

If you're even remotely interested in the wellness industry (and if you're reading THE/THIRTY, it's a good sign that you are), then you have probably heard of Sakara Life. The popular organic meal-delivery service-turned-full-fledged wellness powerhouse (they also offer a bevy of supplements and superfood-enhanced snacks!), co-founded by Danielle DuBoise and her partner Whitney Tingle in 2011, had sought to transform their clients' lives through the power of food as medicine.

We're fascinated to learn about someone's "off-hours" (long after they've sent off their last work-related email for the day) as much as we are when they're "on," so we were intrigued to see how DuBoise winds down, especially now in quarantine.

Keep scrolling to see how she nourishes herself so she can run a burgeoning wellness brand, as well as a growing family.

I’m Danielle DuBoise, and I am one of the founders of Sakara Life, here to walk you through my weekend wind-down.

I am a mother to a two-year-old with another on the way so my nighttime routine certainly changes depending on the day, but I want to share some of the ways I wind down, and nourish, even though life can be wild and crazy.

As I start to wind down from the day, I'm so grateful to have a Sakara meal waiting for me. Oftentimes, I share my meal with my family and use it as a side dish to accompany something we cook together. But tonight, I've already fed my little one, so I'm enjoying one of my favorites—our DIY pulled jackfruit tacos with pasilla chile salsa.

I love to plate Sakara meals to take in just how much food is packed inside. But also to be a part of the experience of "making” it. While I enjoy cooking, I rarely have the time and this is where Sakara truly saves me!

After wrapping up dinner, I love to play music and dance with my daughter. It’s our favorite way to wind down together before her bedtime.

Now it’s time to change into my pajamas, these ones are so chic and comfortable. And as you can imagine, they’ve gotten a lot of use over the past five months spent mostly in the house. Comfy, but dressed up for the occasion!

As for evening skincare, I prefer to keep it simple with potent ingredients. I use Vintner's Daughter Active Treatment Essence and Active Botanical Serum before bed each night and the combination has been truly transformative for my skin.

I light a candle from Heretic Parfum (I can’t wait to try this new scent I just received, Dirty Grass) as I get ready for bed. Heretic is free of synthetics and made from 100% plant and flower materials, and the scents are heavenly.

Settling into bed, I choose from a rotating stack of titles I keep on my nightstand. I move between reading novels and reading the information, and right now, I'm in an information phase. Lately, I've been going back to The Microbiome Solution by Dr. Robynne Chutkan, or Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss, PH.D. I end up taking away something new each time.
