I'm Not a Betting Woman, but I'm Certain This Trainer Trend Will Dominate 2024

When we look at the fundamentals of a versatile wardrobe, there are a few key items that spring to mind; any editor will argue that a crisp white tee and a reliable pair of jeans are worth their weight in gold. Beyond that, a classic blazer and a pair of wool trousers won't go amiss. On the footwear front, the past 10 years have seen sleek white trainers lead the way, but this season, change is afoot.

Whilst I wouldn't go so far as to decree that white trainers are "out" (let's face it—they never will be), their colourful comrades have certainly saturated the landscape in recent months. Thanks to buzzy collaborations such as Adidas x Wales Bonner and an ever-expanding collection of colourful Gazelles hitting the market, it's been hard to ignore the appeal of these joy-sparking trainers.

There's no denying that technicolour trainers are outfit-elevators. Whether brightening up a basic outfit with a subtle flush of colour or adding dimension to an already bright ensemble, these fun styles have been warmly welcomed into the wardrobe rotations of those in the know.

Adidas has championed rainbow hues across its collections for a while, but now other, less well-known designers have risen through the ranks for their joyful takes on footwear. Onitsuka Tiger's sunshine yellow Mexico 66 style became an Instagram favourite last year (which, incidentally, NET-A-PORTER's buyers have picked up for 2024), whilst sportswear label Salomon expanded its colours to include vibrant tones and gradient shades across its collections.

Indulging in Gen Z's love of colour, the bright trainer trend appears to be here to stay. Whilst I don't suggest you retire your trusty white kicks, you'll probably find that your mood (and outfit) lifts upon slipping into a decidedly more vivid pair.

So if you're in the market for a footwear refresh, read on for our pick of the best colourful trainers.
