There's no denying that fashion is often a mirror that reflects our wider society. Case in point: Currently there are two distinct camps when it comes to style. Either you're a maximalist who can put Joey Tribbiani to shame with layering skills, or you're part of the nu-minimalism crowd that sticks to classics with a twist and loves quiet, muted colours. There is, much like the rest of the world, a complete divide down the middle on preference. For 2020, this polarisation is set to continue, and it's no better represented than in the colour trends for 2020, which are either bold or muted.
While we saw lots of beiges and neons from the S/S 19 trends, this year coming we'll see a continuation of these themes. So instead of beige, we've got browns, lemony yellows, pale pink and baby blue. As for the neons, S/S 20 will retain the hot pink, but tangerine orange and deep greens are contenders for the boldest look-at-me colours in the New Year.
Certain fashion houses have spearheaded these colour trends more than others. Gucci, for example, arguably the pioneer of this generation's maximalism, is all about the deep colours. Over at Bottega Veneta (the new old Celine for many), muted tones are unavoidable, with pale yellow and blue bags and shoes, which are bound to sell out the moment they drop online. But then Jacquemus has embraced the two tribes with his collection beautifully juxtaposing bold and delicate hues. Whichever way you prefer to wear your colours, there's one thing I know for sure about the trends for the coming year: You won't be bored and you won't be pushed for choice. Perhaps my favourite colour of all set to be big in 2020 is this denim. Wear it on dresses, shoes, bags, whatever—just wear it.
