The Secret High-Street Pieces a Celebrity Stylist Would Recommend
She's the super stylist and creative director responsible for creating iconic looks for Rihanna, Kim Kardashian West and Lorde, but Avigail Collins's wardrobing skills extend even further. See her own streetwear-inspired line, Silver Spoon Attire, which she founded in 2013 alongside her husband (and fellow sought-after stylist) Damian Collins. The stylist's high-profile music clients and global street style following make up a pretty impressive fan club. If anyone can spot the next big thing, it's Avigail, which is why we're thrilled to have her at Who What Wear UK to bring you a monthly column about what's hot now.
When it comes to shopping on the high street, I'm aware that the sheer volume of products on offer can be totally overwhelming. Over the years, I've worked out where is worth visiting for sensible, forever kinds of purchases. So rather than using the high street for throwaway one-season wonders, I'm sharing with you the best places for everything from cotton basics through to more unique investment pieces you'll keep for years to come. Here's where I shop for myself, my child and my clients—without breaking the bank.
& OTHER STORIES
My favourite retailer for jeans, swimwear and accessories is & Other Stories. It's a great all-arounder, if only for women! The skincare packaging reminds me of Margiela, which is always a good thing. I haven't tried it yet, but the underwear selection looks great, so that's next on my list to investigate. What I find consistent with this brand is its costume jewellery. I can always find amazing pieces that will lift an outfit (like for a holiday look) and won't break the bank.
BRANDY MELVILLE
I've mentioned before how much I love this shop. I can't find a better quality cotton T-shirt or vest anywhere—Brandy Melville really does a great job here. For me, Brandy is the new American Apparel. It's dominated the cotton basics market. The only thing that really annoys me is how it is "one size fits all." We need bigger sizes available.
WEEKDAY
Weekday is always a stop when I'm styling my clients. I love Weekday's wide-leg trousers. Its recent Champion collaboration was also great. For understated, simple basics, it has Acne Studio vibes, but at a far lower price. It's also brilliant for jackets and roll-necks, and I love the brand's skirts.
ANTHROPOLOGIE
Anthropologie is frustratingly expensive for the high street; however, it really does have its own aesthetic. If you catch its sale in time, you can pick up some "forever" pieces. For me, it's all about shirts, pyjamas, homeware and, randomly, its hair accessories. I have brilliant hair slides and grips from there—the kind that reminds of what you'd find in little Italian boutiques. It's a place I can't walk past without going in! I love collecting plates from Anthro, and its Luke Edward Hall collaboration was amazing.
ARKET
This store is basically like the (old) Celine of the high street. Arket basically caters to everyone. It has the best kids' clothes menswear and womenswear, plus its Scandi homeware selection is perfect. It's hard to say what Arket is ultimately best at, as I think it's really another all-arounder, but the one thing I couldn't live without is its kidswear. The quality is amazing and it doesn't break the bank. I'm really not into designer clothes for kids—I find it totally pointless. So to have a shop on the high street where I can get clothes for my toddler that are good quality and in simple block colours and prints has been a lifesaver.
