CBD May Be the Missing Ingredient in Your Morning Routine—Here's Why
What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed in the morning? A well-rounded morning routine sets the tone for the day and gets you prepped—both mentally and physically—before diving into a packed schedule filled with emails, chores, happy hours, workouts, and more. Our series Morning Person profiles those who have mastered the art of the morning routine. Tune in every Monday morning here and on our Instagram to learn exactly how the pros get it all done before the sun comes up, from their go-to breakfasts to their a.m. workouts.
At this point, it seems like we've dived into every aspect of CBD, from how to know what kind is best for you to how it can alleviate your anxiety. We've spoken to countless experts and thumbed through tons of research to give you a comprehensive download on the trendy subject. But in spite of that, there are tons we still don't know about CBD: It's a market that isn't super regulated… yet. The good news is that the FDA held its first hearing on CBD last month, so we should be hearing more soon. That's not to say that we haven't had our own positive experiences with CBD (I've found myself frequently holding a few drops of oil under my tongue before bedtime to ease myself to sleep); while we wait for more concrete research, it's helpful to hear firsthand accounts about how CBD is impactful addition to one's wellness routine.
Which leads us to our conversation with Beryl Solomon, the founder of Poplar (coined "the Net-a-Porter of CBD"). Naturally, she's a huge fan of the stuff, but she also shares a similar sentiment with us in that she believes CBD is something that needs our due diligence. Poplar carefully selects all of its products—its website even proclaims "We promise to never put anything out there that we don’t love and don’t currently have in our own medicine cabinets/nightstands/bags/cars"—and has them all independently tested.
As you can probably imagine, Beryl swears by several CBD products and has incorporated them into her routine for a less stressful, more calm morning routine. Keep scrolling for Beryl's own words on her favorites and how she uses them each and every morning.
6:30 a.m.
My kids are my alarm. I love waking up to them. Typically around 6:30 a.m. they bound into our bedroom full of excitement for the day. We cuddle, kiss, laugh; my husband and I try to soak in their optimism and energy—it is the perfect start to the day. Then, the boys (ages 6 and 4) decamp to the kitchen while my husband heads to the shower.
7:00 a.m.
The boys sit at the table and we chat while I make them breakfast which consists of "toast and cheese” (aka cinnamon raisin bread and cream cheese) for Abe and "toast and jelly” (cinnamon raisin bread and strawberry preserves) for Jonah, plus a ton of fresh fruit and a glass of vanilla almond milk for both! While they eat, we continue to chi-chat (we are a loud bunch!) We ask Google what the weather is and talk about the schedule for the day: what after-school activities they have, who is putting them to bed, etc. Simultaneously, I kick off my daily wellness regiment. It starts with Mondo; I keep the jar on the kitchen counter and add a couple of spoonfuls to a large glass of room temperature water. I essentially chug it—my first daily dose of CBD and water is so satisfying. Then I grab a handful of raw almonds, pick up my phone and scan my email for anything urgent, and then quickly shift my attention back to the kids.
7:45 a.m.
It's "get dressed time." I pick out the boys clothes and stage them on the couch—they now get themselves dressed. I slather on facial moisturizer, roll this godsend over my sinuses, and pop on workout clothes—typically black capri leggings. I'm currently living in these. All the while, I chug water… My goal is to finish a liter before we leave the house.
8:05 a.m.
By 8:05 a.m., all four of us are out the door. Ideally we all walk to school and do drop off together. My husband Michael and I first drop off Abe and then Jonah. Then, we grab a coffee and connect over our day. It’s a nice tradition—sort of the last calm before the storm.
8:30 a.m.
Michael is on the subway to midtown, and I am headed to work out. I alternate between SoulCycle and Yoga Vida Heated Flow. Whenever possible, I sprinkle in Shadowbox, The Class, SLT, or Physique 57, but those are less frequent. I try to work out four times a week—three is my minimum to stay sane and attending five classes means I'm having a great week. Post-workout, I liberally apply a CBD topical as needed. Some of my favorites include the Wildflower Healing Stick and Chronic Tonic.
10:00 a.m.
Let the workday begin! I take a small drag from my pen and settle in. I am pretty much heads down for the next eight hours. Meetings, event planning, emails, networking, financial modeling… you name it. As an entrepreneur of a startup, I wear a lot of hats.
