The Chic Under-$40 Pants That Can (and Should) Replace Your Favorite Jeans
As someone who has had a lifelong love affair with denim, the fact that I have recently been opting to trade in my beloved jeans for pants and trousers roughly 50% of the time—some examples here and here—has signaled that there’s a serious shift going on, not just with my own style but within the fashion world in general. That’s right: After years and years of jeans-over-everything as the coolest bottoms around, more traditional pants are officially back, people, and all it takes is one look at Instagram or recent street style to prove it.
Furthermore, with both the suiting and utility trends gaining steam over the past year and both themes showing all signs of staying very relevant for S/S 20, there seem to be no better trousers around than those which are cargo-inspired—a combination of the two. They're the perfect union of sleek and casual and add more polish to an outfit than your go-to jeans ever could. Plus, thanks to our very own Who What Wear collection for Target, you can get them (in one of two colors) for less than $40.
If that’s not enough to convince you—though it really should be—I’ve also taken the liberty of rounding up 14 outfits for inspiration on how you can style your pair before you take the plunge. To see all the looks for yourself plus shop our Who What Wear Mid-Rise Cargo Trousers ($35) in black and green at the end, just keep scrolling.
Style tip: The classic combo of pants, a blazer, and turtleneck looks especially good in black, white, and cream.
Style tip: Take a cue from what our favorite fashion girls are doing right now and tuck our trousers into utility boots.
Style tip: When you're in a rush to get out the door, fall back on a monochrome outfit to always look chic.
Style tip: Vests are another trend that's about to be huge for spring, so stock up now and style one with your trousers.
Style tip: Layering neutrals on neutrals is always a safe way to go.
Style tip: Pair your green pants with a bright sweater and complementary pumps for a winter outfit that still feels light.
Style tip: Note how a fashion belt brings all the other edgy elements of this look together.
Style tip: A leather coat makes every outfit feel instantly sleek.
Style tip: Black pants and bright, fuzzy jackets are a match made in heaven.
Style tip: You can never go wrong with a tee and strappy sandals.
Style tip: Green and khaki are perfectly complemented by a pop of red.
Style tip: For a night out, simply pair your pants with a crop top and waist belt.
Style tip: Play with the two trends by styling a sleek blazer with more utility-inspired pants and boots.
Style tip: When opting for all black-and-white clothing, add a pop of color with a fun bag.

Since starting as an intern back in 2013, Nicole Akhtarzad Eshaghpour has held several roles here at Who What Wear, and she is currently Editor-at-Large. It was a less expected route, seeing as she was graduating from business school at USC when this all began, but it has turned out to be the best one for her. Fast-forward to 2024, and she's moved to NYC from her hometown of Beverly Hills and spends her workdays a little differently from when she was an intern starting out. Currently, she focuses on a weekly mélange of shopping content. As far as her personal style goes, she's largely drawn to classic pieces and neutral basics but will always make an exception for something colorful, printed, or bejeweled as long as it's deemed worthy enough. After all, the only thing she loves more than a good party is dressing up for one. On weekdays, she can usually be found at home eating something delicious for dinner and trying to force her husband to watch Summer House.
