Cardi B: The Chart-Topping, Trailblazing, Fashion-Loving Rapper to Know Now
This past month may have been dedicated in style industry circles to the runway shows of spring/summer 2018, but it's also been the month that Cardi B confirmed her world domination—fashion or otherwise. This 24-year-old rapper just toppled Taylor Swift off the Billboard 100 to secure a number one spot with "Bodak Yellow." An accolade which is a feat in itself knowing the super-pop power of Swifty, but when you also consider this young talent is the first female rapper in two decades to climb that summit (the former being Lauryn Hill), something special is going on here.
Cardi B has 10.7 million (and rising) followers on Instagram. They're there for her musical abilities, of course, but they're also there for her humour, honesty, rad wardrobe choices and a peek inside the world of her high-profile crew. She performed at Alexander Wang's after-show party, for example. She's friends with the likes of Bella Hadid, Snoop Dogg and Jourdan Dunn. She wowed on the FROW of NYFW, leading Vogue.com to crown her their "front row queen."
Cardi's recent Christian Siriano–clad turn at the Diamond Ball (alongside Rihanna, no less) was nothing short of jaw-dropping. Paper magazine (as in the publication behind Kim Kardashian West's famous #breaktheinternet cover shoot) have recently photographed her—so watch this space.
This is a girl who in the flick of a filter can switch from body-con, bursting-out-of-my-jumpsuit sassiness to Old Hollywood glamour. Oh, and you're just as likely to find her in an outfit that costs £50 as you are in an Alexander McQueen shearling coat worn with Balenciaga over-the-knee boots—aka our kind of high/low shopping girl.
