Exclusive: Brie Larson Wants You to Know This Rising Female Photographer
The numbers surrounding Captain Marvel are certainly impressive. In just three weeks, the film surpassed a whopping $900 million in ticket sales. Per Variety, that places Captain Marvel within the top 10 biggest comic book film releases of all time. However, the human element is even more compelling than the statistics: Brie Larson is enjoying her well-earned moment in the sun as the badass hero at the center of a mega-franchise, but she's using this attention to shed light on up-and-coming female photographers. How cool is that?
Using Instagram, Larson hand-selected local female photographers to do shoots at different stops on the Captain Marvel press tour. Who What Wear's exclusive images were shot by NYC-based photographer Cheril Sanchez, whose website reads, "The female is the protagonist"—so it's not hard to see why Larson thought she'd be perfect for the press tour. The Dominican Republic–born and Bronx-raised photographer shot Larson wearing Isabel Marant's impossibly cool Tundra Denim Jumpsuit ($825) and Gianvito Rossi boots, and we're thoroughly obsessed with the images. Scroll down to see the photos and read our exclusive interview with Larson about the inspiring initiative, her favorite red carpet look from the press tour, and more.
How did you discover photographer Cheril Sanchez, and how did the idea for this shoot come about?
This shoot was part of a larger initiative for the Captain Marvel press tour. Through Instagram, I’ve been able to find and shoot with incredible local female photographers in each city I visited. The goal is to help to build these women’s professional portfolios by aligning with publications—like Who What Wear—that publish these shoots. It’s been a fun and rewarding journey, meeting and experiencing the talent of these rising stars.
Who are some of your other favorite fashion or creative accounts to follow on Instagram?
@girlgaze, @gentlethrills, @double3xposure, @lesliezhang1992, @coughh_syrup, and @glendalissette
What has been the most rewarding part of playing Captain Marvel?
Seeing and hearing the impact it has made on women around the world. You always hope your work makes an impact on some level, but in a business where things fall short of expectation more often than not, this has been a mind-blowing journey. I truly cannot believe it. It’s brought me to tears on many occasions.
What was your favorite red carpet look from the Captain Marvel press tour?
It’s so hard to choose! The custom Rodarte dress I wore to the L.A. premiere was one of my favorites. Laura and Kate are close friends, so it felt very personal and special to wear a dress that they designed.

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
