This "Ugly" Shorts Trend Will Be a Staple in New York City This Summer

I never thought I'd see the day that fashion people had their panties in a bunch on the streets of New York, but how could I have underestimated such an eclectic group of style enthusiasts? It seems that nothing is really off-limits when it comes to fashion in the city these days. A very controversial fashion trend right now is the resurgence of bloomers, and while they were worn in the 19th century underneath dresses, they've evolved and now have a life of their own outside of the house.

At first when I saw bloomers popping up, I was skeptical, but after seeing a few people style them very well, I've become curious. As I began to put together a mood board on the trend, I also started to build a shopping list to consider for when I'm ready to dive in. Below, see my inspiration and the pieces I'd like to buy first.

But first, what are bloomer shorts?

For me, they can be anything from bunched-up underwear that's a bit longer than your other pairs to frilly short shorts that make you feel in touch with your feminine side. This pair from Miu Miu really says it all.

If you're a bit hesitant to feel like you're wearing your underwear out on the streets, don't worry. You can also try a pair of short shorts like this to channel the "bloomers" trend in a more palatable way. My first purchase will certainly be going in this direction.

This look by Jacquemus is proof that bloomer shorts can be dressed up, too. Styled with a blazer, loud jewelry, and funky heels, they make for a chic outfit.

A true pair of bloomer shorts is wrinkled, making it look like you just stepped out of the bedroom. When styled with an off-the-shoulder top and low heels, they become worthy of wearing out of the house.
