I Live in Leggings Come January—7 Elevated Outfits I’ll Rely on This Month
If you can’t figure out what to wear right now, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Many of us are feeling the same way, especially since the New Year often gets us thinking about our wardrobe, fresh outfit inspo and ways in which we might be experimenting with our style. Plus, we're all still experiencing the post-Christmas slump, meaning getting up and dressed feels pretty tricky and to be honest, the last thing I want to do is put on a dress or jeans. It’s during these times that I like to turn to my most reliable outfits, which help me look effortlessly chic and feel my best, no matter the weather.
When in doubt, simple and effective is my motto, and recently, the look I’ve been reaching for over and over is a classic blazer-and-legging combo. It’s comfy thanks to the leggings and polished thanks to the blazer—a piece that just so happens to also be the perfect transitional layer. So really, it’s a win-win, and the best part is that this pairing can be reimagined in so many different ways to keep it feeling fresh all January long.
Below, I’ve found seven blazer-and-legging looks that feel especially current. They range from celebrity-inspired to influencer-approved, but they all involve minimalist (read: easy to style) formulas that you can throw on in the morning and still look as pulled-together in by the end of the day.
Whether you prefer boots, heels or flat shoes; classic, oversized or leather blazers; stirrup, split-hem or standard leggings, there’s outfit inspo here to suit everyone’s taste. (You can even put some of these outfits together with pieces you already own.) Plus, each outfit can take you from meetings to after-work drinks with hardly any effort.
Keep scrolling to see just how versatile this outfit combo can be. You can also shop each outfit in case you spot anything you’d like to copy!
7 Blazer-and-Legging Outfits to Wear Right Now:
1. Camel Blazer + Ankle Boots + Shoulder Bag
Style Notes: Camel and black is a timeless combination, as demonstrated by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. I love the juxtaposition between the boxy blazer and the ultra-tight leggings.
Shop the Look:
2. Belted Blazer + High-Neck Knit + Chunky Boots
Style Notes: If you tend to feel frumpy in relaxed silhouettes, opt for a belted blazer to cinch you in at the waist.
Shop the Look:
Break up the all-black look with this white ribbed knit.
3. White Blazer + Mini Bag + Stilettos
Style Notes: Take note from Marilyn and have some fun with proportions; a micro bag and pointed stilettos are unexpected additions to a blazer-and-leggings look, but we think it all works flawlessly.
Shop the Look:
A white, beige or cream blazer is far more versatile than you think, just size up for a boxier, masculine fit.
A classic legging that will go with everything from trainers to heels.
4. Relaxed Blazer + Grey Knits + Riding Boots
Style Notes: We're all for layering, especially as the temperature has seriously dropped this January. Pair similar neutrals (such as charcoal, grey and black) together for a cohesive look.
Shop the Look:
John Lewis leggings are really high quality for the price.
5. Navy Blazer + Sweatshirt + Trainers
Style Notes: We're calling it—navy is going to be huge this year. Again! Dress down a sophisticated wool blazer with a sweatshirt and understated trainers.
Shop the Look:
A navy wool blazer has become one of my wardrobe staples.
The split hem detail makes these leggings perfect for a trouser-devotee's first foray into ultra slim-leg leggings.
6. Boxy Blazer + Breton Knit + Ballet Pumps
Style Notes: Winter is all about layering, so this consider slinging a striped knit over your shoulders in case the chill hits. Then, balance out the boyish fit of your blazer with a pair of dainty ballet flats.
Shop the Look:
7. Grey Blazer + Belt + Knee-High Boots
Style Notes: There's just something about a blazer paired with sleek belt that looks extremely chic. Add a classic black knee-high boot and understated jewellery and you've got yourself an outfit that you can wear in and out of the office.
