I consider my style to be sort of "downtown classic” with a twist. My wardrobe is stocked with essentials like basic black ankle boots, skinny jeans, leather jackets, and neutral knits, and I’m quite fussy when shopping for items that veer outside of my style comfort zone. (I often just purchase modern updates to the staples I listed above each season.) However, I’m also down for taking risks from time to time when a trend just feels right to me. And when I do want to flex those fashion muscles, I tend to seek advice and from those I admire in the industry—like Shopbop’s fashion director, Caroline Maguire.

After recently catching up with the shopping expert, it became quickly apparent that there’s actually five key trends she’s feeling right now (and couldn’t stop talking about). What I realized is that each of the looks in question is forward but could still be worked into a classic wardrobe. To show you what I mean, I broke down the five trends (some of which you'll see sprinkled throughout the Shopbop site) below with notes on why Caroline loves them, and why I’m ready to try them or recommend them to friends. Keep scrolling for more, and get inspired to refresh your fall and winter wardrobe as well.

’90s Denim

Caroline’s Notes: "I’m currently obsessed with high-waisted straight-legged jeans. When temperatures drop, I’ll tuck in an oversize knit and cinch everything with a cool belt.”

Why I’m into the trend: I legit only live in black skinny jeans, but the cool nature of this throwback (yet very-right-now) trend intrigues me. I think I’ll probably test out looser, faded black ’90s-inspired jeans with my favorite moto jacket and boots this season.

Modern Western

Caroline’s Notes: "Tone down fringed separates or cowboy-inspired boots with options that feature sleek accents to avoid going too desperado.”

Why I’m into the trend: While I’ve been intimidated by this popular trend over the last few seasons, the more streamlined and polished approach to the look with the variety of unique boot and jacket options feels modern and of-the-moment.

Bold Animal Prints

Caroline’s Notes: "Leopard, tiger, snake, you name it! I like to wear my animal prints with contrasting stripes for a modern take on the perennial favorite.”

Why I’m into the trend: I’ve dabbled in animal patterns over the last few years with leopard-print jackets, but I’m 100% ready to branch out with tiger- and snake-print silhouettes this fall and winter to nab those compliments.

Slouchy Boots

Caroline’s Notes: "Right now, I’m really into buttery-soft leathers and fierce python prints. I’ll be stepping up every look this fall by adding a scrunched-down mid-calf pair to my look.”

Why I’m into the trend: TBH, it’s all about slouchy boots this season—especially with baggier jeans or trousers tucked inside. I continue to spot fashion girls in the look, and I’m very much here for it because the vibe is so fresh.

Sophisticated Dresses

Caroline’s Notes: "This season, it’s all about high necklines, voluminous sleeves, and calf-brushing hems. The best part? There are so many bright colors and bold prints to choose from.”

Why I’m into the trend: There are so many gorgeous midi-dress styles out there right now. I’m looking forward to suggesting some of the beautiful printed silhouettes to my friends this season to make a statement.
