I Just Tried the High Street's Best Striped Polo Shirts—These 5 Stood Out
From Arket to M&S, these stores are committing to the preppy basic for spring.

When I think of the striped polo shirt's rise in popularity, I can’t help but be instantly transported to early noughties and late ’90s fashion. Synonymous with that era, this basic silhouette was mostly reserved for the wardrobes of our fathers and grandfathers for a good twenty years. But then came Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2024 collection, flipping the idea of a striped polo on its head—this preppy-chic revival taps into the desire shoppers are experiencing for nostalgia and the seemingly free spirit of the time.
Since the Italian fashion brand (aka Lyst Index’s Hottest Fashion Brand of 2024) put this born-again staple back on the map this year, the trend has filtered into all corners of the industry, and striped polos are everywhere. Had you asked me a year ago whether I would swap my white tees for a preppy polo in 2025, I wouldn't have agreed. But following countless Instagram posts, celebrity looks and editor recommendations, I am now obsessed.
A striped polo or rugby top may seem a little complex to weave into outfits, but it actually slots seamlessly into every variation of a capsule wardrobe, minimalist or maximalist. What makes these cute collared shirts so special? By nature, a polo is a versatile piece. Typically made from lightweight, breathable fabrics, it’s the kind of top that keeps you cool and comfortable—even when temperatures soar. Layered under a blazer, it gives a polished, collegiate finish. For a more lo-fi look, you could pair it with combat trousers and penny loafers. If you already have great wardrobe staples, a striped polo can completely transform the overall vibe of a plain outfit, making it feel more playful and intentional. Bold striped tops can be styled with basics like a black skirt combined with white socks and loafers, while more traditional, understated stripes work just as well with jeans, tailored trousers, skirts, and just about any other bottom you can think of.
This week, I set myself a challenge: to find the best striped polos on the high street and see if any could provde that Miu Miu aesthetic on a more M&S-level budget. Spoiler alert—a few really stood head and shoulders above the rest. I’ve rounded up the best affordable polo shirts that I tried on, plus a few more options that I don’t think will stay in stock for long.
1. Mango
Style notes: My favourite in this edit has to be this striped polo from Mango—it was everything and more. I loved the material; it felt incredibly soft against my skin. The fabric is light enough to keep you cool as the weather warms up. Staying true to size (a Medium), its naturally oversized, boxy fit fell perfectly to my preferred length. I’d lean into the preppy vibe when styling this, pairing it with a black miniskirt, white socks, and loafers for that effortlessly chic look.
When it comes to colour combinations, white and dark blue are as luxe-looking as it gets. Pair with tailored navy trousers and crisp white sneakers for a polished off-duty look.
2. Zara
Style notes: I can’t lie—I ended up buying this polo. While the fabric was more sheer than expected (definitely more lightweight than it appeared online), the colour combination completely won me over. It instantly had me dreaming of summer and all the outfits I could create around it. One standout detail? The buttons against the rich burgundy hue—they add such a nice contrast and feel elevated.
Fit-wise, I went with my usual size (a Medium), and it hugged in all the right places without being clingy. If you're after a more relaxed look, you could size up, but I found true to size worked well for me. I’d style this with light-wash denim shorts or a white mini skirt for an easy, breezy warm-weather look.
If you're into lightweight layers and playful colour pairings, this one's definitely worth a try—just keep the opacity in mind!
This one’s selling out fast, so if you’re into it, I’d recommend checking out quickly. Style it with—or tuck it into—a white midi skirt and add strappy sandals for an effortlessly elevated summer look.
3. H&M
Style Notes: When setting out for this try-on, this was the first polo on my list. It’s been going viral on socials, and for good reason. I went back to buy this H&M textured knit after seeing it styled in so many ways by other fashion experts. Sold as part of a two-piece set, this is the perfect summer polo because the texture adds interest but it’s still keeping a casual, laid-back vibe thanks to the silhouette.
It fits true to size—I loved the length—and because it's not tight, you could size up or down depending on your preferred fit. What really sold me is how versatile it is. I’ve styled it since the try-on with everything from straight-leg jeans and trainers to a black mini skirt and biker boots. This top does all the heavy lifting for you—it’s easy to dress up or down.
An elevated basic, I predict this will be in a staple in your wardrobe for a while.
4. M&S
Style Notes: I usually love M&S basics for their reliable quality and staple status, but this polo wasn’t quite it for me. The cotton felt nice, but the fit was a little too form-fitting on the arms and not quite boxy or long enough for my personal preference. If you have a shorter torso, though, this might be just right.
That said, the colour really stood out—it’s super wearable and would make an excellent layering piece. I’d style it with white denim and lean into a polished, put-together vibe. It’s not a total miss, just one that depends more on your body type and fit preference.
This polo is perfect for warmer weather—and refreshingly affordable, making it a for easy, everyday styling.
5. Arket
Style Notes: This Arket polo was a surprisingly strong contender. With a soft yet structured composition, it struck a perfect balance that really impressed me. I loved the length, fit, and print. I stayed true to size (again), but I feel I could’ve sized down and still achieved my desired fit. I’d style this polo with a dark-wash denim skirt and pointed-toe boots for a chic, transitional look.
I would also try styling this with barrel jeans and Adidas Speedcats.
