11 Short Hairstyles to Make Styling Thick Hair a Whole Lot Easier
Over the past few years, short hair—especially bobs and lobs—have been everywhere. Call it the Victoria Beckham effect. This look never appears to go out of style. While other cuts come and go, the sleek sharpness of a short haircut is always a winner. But there are some cuts for who the shorter length can be problematic—namely those with thick hair.
While others might be jealous of your lustrous locks, it can actually take a while to style, sometimes even more so when shorter. The thing is that not all hairstyles work if your hair is of the thicker variety, and getting it looking sleek can be quite the styling task. In fact, so much wielding of your trusty GHDs that you end up with RSI.
Hairstylist Paul Edmonds, the owner of Paul Edmonds London and hair partner for the BAFTAs, offers some sage advice: "Short haircuts for thick hair are always dependant on face shape. However, the general trend with short hair is either jaw length with a blunt-edged bob, which, on thicker hair, means cutting through the under layers. It can also be worn square like Natalie Portman or rounded like Taylor LaShae. Shorter layered haircuts like Zoë Kravitz are cut through, worn close and sleek".
If all of the above sounds like you, and you're desperate to chop your thick hair, then you've come to the right place. Get ready for some short hairstyle inspiration, below.
TOUSLED
Add shape to an ever-sharp bob with this quick trick. The flip on the front pieces creates dimension and is easy to shape with your straighteners.
SIDE BANGS
Not only framing the face, side bangs also create some sleep layers to the hair. Styled with natural-looking waves, it’s easy and takes little to no time.
WISPY BANGS
The essential summer hairstyle is lightweight and doesn't carry too much weight at the front of the face. Wispy bangs are perfect for a warm summer's evening and won't have your hair sticking to your forehead.
HALF UP
Sleek, elegant and a look that thick hair can carry off without much effort. The half-up, half-down style makes the hair more manageable and adds volume to the centre of the head.
BLUNT CUT
A blunt cut is sharp, sassy and sophisticated. It's a cut that suits any length, but with thick hair, you can create the volume everyone else will be envious of.
PIXIE CUT
This is when you will be thankful for your thick hair. In a pixie cut, you can create the perfect amount of volume. When styled to one side, try some deep side bangs.
NEAT AFRO
Whether sporting a Lupita Nyong'o cut or going for an all-round tight afro, this is easy to maintain. Just ensure you moisturise and brush through the curls in order to make it stay neat, shiny and healthy.
CURLY
Tight, curly and yet perfectly curated? Avoiding the "poodle" look and styling it in a chopped finish is what will give the look more edge.
HIGH PONY
Sometimes, you just crave a high pony. Tie it at the crown with either a scrunchie or silk hair tie (to avoid creases) and try to flip out the ends to make it look fancy.
LOW BUN
Pull it back, wrap it round and still look chic! With an easy middle part, this can look sensational for both a day in the office or a night on the town.
LOOSE WAVES
This look was made for thick and short hairstyles. It's bouncy and easy to run your styler through, but the thickness of your hair means that you will be able to hold the curl without having to fight with it.
