New York City has some of the best nightlife in the world—whether you prefer something slow, like catching up with friends over a delicious meal, or more of an adventure, like dancing until the sun comes up. Whatever your preference, you’re sure to be on your feet a lot as hopping across boroughs is pretty much a given. And, while Uber is nice and all, sometimes it’s best (for your bank account) to settle for a stroll or the subway. But that doesn’t mean your outfit needs to suffer! We polled tried-and-true New York City girls for their favorite shoes to hop around the city in at night, and their answers are all the proof we need.

“I’m really short so I always opt for a really high shoe, but the ankle strap and closed portion on the front of this pair allows me to hop around town with minimal disturbance.” — Claire

“To be quite frank, heels don’t last long in New York City—no matter how much they cost. I like to go for fast-fashion shoes on most nights out because I’d rather not wreck my pricey pieces. These Forever21’s are my fave.” — Laura
“I’m tall, so flats all the way, because why be uncomfortable if I don’t need to? I recently splurged on this pair and haven’t looked back.” — Zena
“As a Brit in NYC, I try to buy most of my pieces from overseas brands to stand out, and Finery has some of the best going out shoes. These are the MOST comfortable heels I own.” — Lucy
“Although this heel doesn’t look sturdy, the closed toe and wrap-around part make them so easy to dance in. I know platforms are considered better, but these are so light which I appreciate.” — Freya
“Every NYC girl needs a great going-out pair of ankle boots, and these are my current faves. They look just as good with skinny jeans as they do with a mini dress!” — Paige
