Move Over, Boring Black Coat: J-Law Just Convinced Me to Buy This Colour Instead

Whether or not you've been actively keeping up with the latest trends, you'll have likely picked up on the fact that hot red is having a major moment for the first time in as long as we can remember. The fiery shade was prolific on the A/W 23 runways earlier this year, cropping up in the form of long dresses, neat coats, sharp shoes and all sorts of accessories, and spotted in collections by Victoria Beckham, Ferragamo, The RowBottega Veneta and Tory Burch. Now, as we find ourselves in winter, the paintbox shade has made its way onto the high street too and has been adopted as the new favourite shade of those in the know.

Whilst bright red is a classic colour that never really goes out of style, this season we've noticed the fashion set weaving it into their wardrobes with fresh enthusiasm. Celebrities have been styling the shade since autumn, and a couple of months on, we're noticing more stylish names taking the plunge on a bright red wool coat to ward off the winter chill.

Jennifer Lawrence attending the Broadway opening of Appropriate last night in a simple, elevated drop-shoulder red coat from—you probably guessed it—The Row. Having become a fan of their elevated, minimalistic wares in the past year, it's no wonder that Lawrence opted into this trend in the most luxe and "quiet luxury" way possible with the brushed cashmere collarless Priske coat which comes in at a cool £9140. Good news for many shoppers out there is that there are plenty of fantastic options at different price points to suit a variety of budgets.

Whilst red might strike you as too bold a colour for outerwear, I'm a firm believer that a red coat will breathe fresh life into your wardrobe in ways no other colour could. If you find yourself wearing head-to-toe black more often than not, then the addition of a red wool coat will help you finesse your look with a vibrant touch. Alternatively, style it with a fresh white tee and your favourite pair of jeans in whichever wash you prefer, as red and denim are a match made in heaven. And if you're fearless when it comes to wearing colour, a tonal red and pink look toes the line between complementary and clashing for a fashion-forward take that any editor would commend you for.

So, if you're interested in ditching your black coats for something a little more fun, shop my edit of the best red wool coats available to buy now.
