I Just Tried a Bunch of Lash Serums—These Are the Ones That Actually Worked
For most of my life, people have commented on my eyelashes. Looking at me front on sans mascara, you wouldn’t be able to tell that my lashes are as thick and long as they are. Just like my hair, they are poke-straight and resist any kind of curl or lift, meaning I haven't really been able to reap the benefits. Having said that, as soon as I sit down to get my makeup done, nine times out of 10, the makeup artist has some sort of a compliment to pay me on my lashes. In recent years, however, I’ve noticed a dramatic shift in their appearance.
Once upon a time, my lash line was so thick that I didn’t fully understand why people felt the need to use eyeliner every single day. A few years ago though, I started to notice that my lash line was looking a little sparse and that I could spot bald patches and areas of thinness when I looked closely. Then, I began to notice more lashes in the sink after cleansing my face in the evening and removing my mascara.
For many months, I thought little of it, but then, I noticed that my go-to mascara wasn’t working its usual lash-boosting miracles. In general, my lashes were looking thinner and more sparse and weren’t framing my eyes in the way they once did. While I knew that lash serums were a thing, I’d previously never given them the time of day. In all honesty, there is no product in the world that can actually make your lashes grow longer, however, lash fallout had never been something I’d had to consider.
In theory, products that work to condition and strengthen lashes meant that any fallout I was experiencing could be reduced, and I was willing to give them a go. So over the course of the last couple of years, I’ve tried and tested an array of lash serums, treatments, and oils in a bid to get my lashes back on track and looking their thick, healthy selves once more. Although my speculations were correct (no product is going to make your real lashes longer), I have found a number of products that helped to keep lashes in tip-top condition and prevent fallout. Keep scrolling to discover the lash serums I really rate.
1. Maybelline Lash Sensational Lash Serum
Something I find slightly irritating about most lash serums is that the applicators don't tend to be particularly user-friendly. This stuff, however, is just swiped on with a spoolie and left my lashes feeling (and looking) conditioned and glossy. As for noticeable regrowth, though, I can't say I noticed any dramatic changes.
2. BareMinerals Strength & Length Serum-Infused Mascara
At some point last year, I noticed that drying mascaras were significantly contributing to my lash fallout. This formula from BareMinerals contains a nourishing serum that helps keep lashes healthy to minimise any damage. Plus, as a mascara, it is lengthening and thickening.
3. L'Oréal Paris Clinically Proven Lash Serum
I must admit that I found this particular serum tricky to use, as its thick brush made the whole ordeal quite messy. Having said that, for £15, the results were far from budget. After a few weeks, my lashes looked the healthiest they had been in a long time. If you're looking for an affordable option, this won't let you down.
4. Nouveau Lashes Lash & Brow Conditioning Serum
For those whose lashes have been left worse for wear as a result of lash lifts, extensions, or treatments, this conditioning serum will help get things back on track in no time at all.
5. Lancôme Cils Booster Lash Revitalising Serum
Most lash serums look a little ugly on the shelf. However, this stuff is seriously pretty to look at. I must admit, though, that the packaging is the best bit. Although my lashes definitely felt softer, I'm not sure it helped prevent any loss.
6. Autograph at Marks & Spencer Lash Enhancing Serum
I have mixed feelings towards this serum. The oils certainly made my lashes healthier over time, and I'd say the results were great given the price. However, I really didn't enjoy applying it at night—it left my eye area feeling a little oily and sticky.
7. UK Lash Eyelash Serum
This stuff doesn't contain any oils, so, compared to others, it feels almost non-existent on the lashes. The thin brush makes it easy to apply, and I definitely noticed less fallout after a few of weeks of use.
8. BBB London Luscious Lash Oil
I really loved using this. Not only does it feel luxurious to use, but the spoolie also made coating lashes in nourishing oils a total breeze, and you really feel like you're giving them a treat every time you apply it.
9. RevitaLash Cosmetics RevitaLash Advanced
I know that the price tag is eye-watering, but sadly, this really is the best lash-boosting serum out there. It's loved by celebs for good reason. It contains a blend of peptides and botanicals to fortify lashes and make them stronger and thicker. After just a couple of weeks of use, my lashes looked fuller, thicker, and glossier than they had in years. Would I buy it again? At £97, the price is seriously steep, and I think other serums offer relatively similar results. (Although, they're not quite as good, I must say.)
10. RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum
This is probably the closest more-affordable dupe of RevitaLash I tried. I have used the brow version of this product before and really loved how conditioned and soft it made my strands. After a few weeks of using this, my lashes were definitely boosted. However, it wasn't something I regularly found myself reaching for because it just doesn't feel particularly luxe to use.
11. Perricone MD No Makeup Mascara
Another amped-up mascara, this stuff is formulated with biotin and peptides to help strengthen lashes while it works. If you like a low-key lash look, I highly recommend it.
12. HD Brows Lash and Brow Booster
I love the applicator on this. It really helps to grab hold of every single strand. Containing a whole host of super-moisturising, hydrating ingredients, it can be used on both brows and lashes to help strengthen and condition. Overall, I would say this has been my favourite product to use.
13. Embryolisse Lashes & Brows Booster
Most of all, I loved using this product under mascara to condition my lashes and protect them from any potentially drying ingredients in my most-loved formulas. When used on its own, I didn't notice a huge difference. However, when applied before mascara, I definitely noticed less fallout.
14. Shiseido Full Lash Serum
When I first saw the doe-foot applicator on this product, I wasn't sold. However, after a few weeks, I found it to be significantly easier to use than the go-to brush format. Plus, it left my lashes looking almost impossibly glossy.
15. Typology Paris Eyelashes & Brows Serum 2% Pea Peptides + Castor Oil
I can't get enough of this little bottle of lash goodness. It's a very simple blend of castor oil and pea peptides but it really does make such a difference to the glossiness and strength of my lashes. It's pretty enough for me to remember to use it, too.
16. LashFood Natural Eyelash Enhancer
While some formulas did leave my eyes a little uncomfortable and red, this stuff was incredibly gentle. The thin brush made it easy to apply, and my lashes were definitely looking fuller after a couple of months of use.
Next up, this one product is the single best way to brighten up your eye area.
