Here Is the Only Jewellery Trend I'll Buy This Year
As I type, I'm sitting at home in my bedroom and working in heeled knee-high boots, a fitted dress, and a vintage lariat pendant. I feel like myself (because I've never really "done" casual all too well), but I do feel rather silly at the same time. There was just something in that last flourish of a fancy necklace that tipped my WFH outfit into super-smart territory. I've experienced the same feeling when I've put on a pair of statement earrings or done something overly styled with my hair. So that's why the allure of a new, altogether more subtle accessorising trend has piqued my interest: gold chunky rings.
Today, they're omnipresent on Instagram—no mani shot or mirror selfie appears to be complete without a smattering of heavyweight rings. However, I started to notice this simple, classic look bubbling up about two or three years ago when London-based jewellery label Daphine saw a sudden surge in popularity thanks to a very understated chunky, rounded ring called Oli. At £65, it was (and still is) relatively affordable in comparison to its designer counterparts and was quickly snapped up by many an influencer in the know. Prior to this, Chanel had launched its criss-crossed Coco Crush collection—it was received well by fashion leaders and celebrities alike and remains a popular part of the Parisian brand's jewellery offering today. In addition, I can recall seeing certain letters of Chloé's alphabet signet rings were often sold out whenever I checked Net-a-Porter, and then, Lucy Williams launched a 1980s-inspired collection with Missoma which was chock-full of that kind of chunky style. It all started to cement the idea that, while more adventurous jewellery trends will come and go, something as enduring and timeless as a nice gold band will always look good.
Below, you'll find my edit of both the affordable and more expensive chunky gold rings you can buy on the internet right now because this is one clever style you don't have to spend a fortune on if you don't want to. Remember, one is enough, but a couple do look very nice together…
