These Are the 15 Best Body Lotions to Ever Exist, Period

As a beauty editor, I do everything in my power to care for the skin below my neck as well as I care for the skin above it. After all, "skincare" is a comprehensive term. This wasn't always obvious to me. For years, I was lackadaisical when it came to bodycare. Sure, if I spent all day at the beach, I would apply sunscreen, and if my skin was dry and itchy, I would apply body lotion, but that was about it. Now that I'm turning 30 and being more intentional and ritualistic about my routine—not to mention seeing signs of aging and sun damage on my chest, arms, and legs—I'm taking it more seriously.

I love body scrubs, serums, and, most of all, moisturizers. As for the latter, I don't use any old formula I find at the store. Nope. It's 2025, and I want a targeted approach to bodycare. That's why I've created a tightly curated collection of products that 1) moisturize my skin and 2) offer extra benefits, whether that's brightening, firming, or re-texturizing the skin. Since I don't gatekeep, I'm sharing my selects with you. Keep scrolling to see the best body lotions, period.

Some people like the sensorial experience of applying a fragranced body lotion. If that's you, I have recommendations...two recommendations to be exact. I couldn't choose, so I decided to provide a luxe scented option and an affordable scented option. For the former, I like Josie Maran's Topless Tangerine Whipped Argan Oil Refillable Firming Body Butter. The thick, creamy butter melts on contact to moisturize, while the summery citrus scent delicately perfumes my skin.

Pros: Firming, glow-boosting, refillable container, elevated citrus scent

Cons: None.

Texture: Butter | Size: 6.0 oz | Fragrance: Citrus scent

Promising review: "I’ve been waiting to get this for the Sephora sale and finally bought it today. Ever since I smelled it in stores two months ago, I knew this would be the perfect summer scent. It glides on your body, and I love the subtle citrus smell."

What Should I Look For in a Body Lotion?

Camp says you should look for ingredients that will help the skin A) retain water and B) improve skin barrier function. "Examples include ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, petrolatum, niacinamide, and shea butter." These ingredients will hydrate the skin while also improving the barrier function to prevent future water loss. In other words, they offer both instant and long-term moisture benefits.

The good thing about modern body lotions is that they treat the skin just as much as they moisturize it. That means that the right one for you depends on your skin concerns and overall goals. For example, if you have dry skin, look for a body lotion with occlusive ingredients, like plant oils and butters, which will lock moisture in and prevent transepidermal water loss. If you have mature skin, look for a body lotion that has a rich formula to deeply moisturize the skin. You could also look for one with anti-aging ingredients like retinol and peptides. Finally, if you have dull or uneven skin, look for a body lotion with brightening ingredients like vitamin C.

How Often Should You Apply Body Lotion?

Body lotions can be used as needed—for many people, that's daily. Camp recommends applying body lotion after showering for the best results. "Keep showers limited to no more than ten minutes and use warm, not hot, water," Camp says. "Use a gentle cleanser that does not remove excess oil from the skin surface. Apply a moisturizing cream or lotion just after patting skin dry with a towel in an effort to trap water into the skin's surface."

Can you Apply Body Lotion on the Face?

"Yes, body lotions can sometimes be used on the face," Camp says. "For especially dry skin on the face, sometimes a thick body cream can be used to improve hydration. Keep in mind that the face has a high concentration of oil glands; if [you'll be] using a body product on the face, consider using lightweight body lotions which may be less likely to clog pores."
