Layering season is upon us! Now, we all know that good layering is an art form, and as someone who didn't grow up in cold weather, I've had to learn through trial and error over the years. What you choose to wear under your winter coat makes a world of difference in both style and comfort. Anything too bulky underneath makes me feel like the Michelin Man, yet too few layers and I'm freezing. The correct base can make or break your day. 

So I've taken styling notes from my East Coast friends and all the cool fashion people I follow on Instagram to help me identify the outfit formulas that always work. I've clocked a few key basics that layer perfectly underneath coats of all kinds, making them the building blocks of an ideal winter outfit. Sweaters are synonymous with winter, and they happen to lie perfectly under a big winter coat. I tend to lean toward a more fitted sweater for easier layering, but virtually any sweater style pairs well. Plus the juxtaposition of textures looks so chic peaking out of your coat.

Long-sleeve bodysuits are like the white T-shirts of winter—they pair well with everything and act as the perfect base layer for any outfit. Plus, you don't have to worry about your top bunching up, which is a huge selling point when multiple layers are involved.

The most comfortable item on this list, the long-sleeve tee is the ultimate layering piece. Depending on the temperature, you can wear it on its own or layer under a sweater with your coat on top for an elevated outfit that also keeps you warm.
