I Thought Under-Eye Puffiness Was Part of My Anatomy—Then I Tried These Eye Creams
Whenever I'm feeling tired or rundown, you can always tell by looking at my eyes. Yep, my dark circles and under-eye puffiness are the first things to give me away. That being said, dark circles are nothing that one of the best eye creams and a bit of under-eye concealer can't fix—especially a really well formulated eye cream for dark circles. However, one thing that I do struggle to cover up in the mornings is the puffiness. Sure, the dark circles are annoying, but on those mornings when I wake up after a bad night's sleep, my under-eye area can be really puffy.
After speaking to friends and colleagues, it seems that this is something loads of us struggle with. So much so, that I decided to reach out to industry experts to find out why this happens to our eyes, and what we can do to fix it. Interestingly enough, while doing my research, I found out that there is actually a wide range of eye creams and eye gels on the market that have been specifically designed with puffiness in mind. Yep, these clever creams contain targeted ingredients to help soothe puffiness under the eyes and make you look a whole lot more awake, so they are definitely worth adding to your skincare routine.
Intrigued? Luckily for you, I've been busy putting these products to the test and have shared all my findings below, including expert advice on why our eyes become puffy in the first place. (Spoiler: my puffiness has been seriously reduced for using them.) Keep on scrolling for all the info...
Why Do We Get Puffiness Under Our Eyes?
So, why are our eyes prone to puffiness? "Under-eye puffiness is a common skin concern with many potential causes," says Kate Somerville, esthetician to the stars and founder of Kate Somerville Skincare. "From fatigue and stress to fluid retention and genetics, the reasons behind puffiness can range from lifestyle habits to the natural effects of ageing. It’s often a combination of factors, but don’t worry—there are plenty of skincare ingredients that can help reduce the appearance of puffiness and restore a refreshed look."

Can an Eye Cream Help With Puffiness?
As mentioned above, there are eye creams out there that have been designed with puffiness in mind. "Under-eye creams can help to improve skin barrier function and decrease inflammation," explains consultant dermatologist, Dr Magnus Lynch. The important thing is to know what skincare ingredients to look out for.
"There are several amazing ingredients that can help to reduce puffiness around the eyes," says Somerville. "My favourites include peptides, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. Peptides help to boost collagen production and strengthen the skin and its structure, reducing sagging and puffiness over time. Hyaluronic acid is an essential ingredient as it helps to boost hydration, meaning it can plump [the skin] to reduce puffiness. Vitamin C is another staple. Not only [will it] brighten [the under-eyes], but it will also protect the delicate eye area from pollution and damage." Caffeine is also a great ingredient to look out for as it can provide a short-term solution to puffiness, so a caffeine eye cream is great for those tired mornings.
Another top tip? Look for an eye cream with a metal applicator. This applicator will help to create a cooling sensation that not only feels amazing, but will also act as a cold compress to help reduce under-eye puffiness.
I've been busy putting the best eye creams to the test to see if they can help reduce puffiness.
