I don't know about you, but I love the start of a new season, particularly the start of autumn/winter. As the leaves turn to fiery orange, and we swap our summer footwear for winter boots, I can't help but get swept up in that back-to-school feeling, pulling out my trusted knitwear and adding some new A/W trends to my wardrobe. Same for you? If so, it's only natural that we're also keen to update our hair as the seasons shift. While in summer, we might opt for lighter, golden hair colour such as balayage, in autumn and winter, it can be fun to embrace those warmer auburn and brunette shades. Nothing gives that back-to-school feeling like a brand-new haircut, and a big chop is a fail-safe for ridding hair of any split ends and faded colour from summertime.

1. Luxurious Copper

As soon as we saw Zendaya step out with this bouncy blowout and beautiful copper-brunette hair colour, we immediately pinned it down as one of the top autumn/winter 2022 hair trends to watch. "Colour-wise, I think we are going to see more auburn colours, as most people want a warmer effect to match the season, toning down their blonde or balayage pieces to more red tones, such as caramel brown warm, to match the mood of the season," says Max Andreas, hairstylist and expert at Claxton Hair. To keep that expensive-looking shine that you get with a new hair colour, be sure to use a regular hair mask to lock in the gloss.

We love Gigi Hadid's deep-auburn take on the copper hair colour trend, which she's paired with a stylish eyelash-skimming fringe.

Ask your stylist to weave multidimensional copper tones through the lengths of your hair, which will make curls shine.

2.'70s Shapes

Seventies haircuts and hairstyles are still a strong hair trend for autumn/winter 2022. "The '70s-blowout look is becoming a popular style and haircut in the salon," says Rebecca Watkins, hairstylist at Tweedie & Marshall Hairdressing. "Many of our clients are loving the chunky bangs and blow-dries with loads of volume and a big bouncy curl to finish it off."

"The '70s are still so influential for A/W 22," says Barry Maddocks, UK creative director of Haringtons. "The effortless half-up, half-down vibe is a strong vibe, and I’m totally here for it; think Brigitte Bardot, undone and effortless. This look is totally chic and is day-and-night appropriate." 

Here, Symphani Soto gives Bridgette Bardot's classic hairstyle a modern update. "To get the look, first I would create some movement throughout the hair using a GHD tong. Then, taking a Kent Brush large quill paddle brush, brush out by pulling some of the sides up and pinning in place," says Maddocks.

A full '70s-inspired fringe looks so chic and is a nod to the French-girl hair trend, too.

3. Undone Bun

Not just for working from home, a messy bun is a timeless classic, and a welcome antidote to the sleek buns we've been seeing of late. And hairstylists are seeing the return of the trend, too. "I think we will also see the return of the messy bun," notes Rhys Chiwara, hairstylist at November Collective salon.

4. Bottleneck Bangs

A nod to the '70s hair trends that we're seeing, fringes are big news for A/W 22, with bottleneck bangs making a great option. "Fringes and soft bottleneck bangs will reign supreme, giving us more of the much-loved '70s vibes," says Chiwara.

Bottleneck bangs are showcased beautifully when tied back into a ponytail.

5. Natural Texture

More of a cultural shift than a trend, textured hair will continue to be embraced in its natural form. "For those with naturally textured hair, we will be seeing people embrace those stunning curls," says Maddocks. "Keeping the natural texture is super beautiful. Simone Rocha celebrated curls on the runway by teaming natural texture with hair accessories."

"Rather than working against your natural texture, work with it," says Paul Percival, the founder of Percy & Reed and a BaByliss global ambassador. "The shag haircut is a nice way to enhance a curl, and there is a type of shag cut to suit everyone, whether that's a soft fringe, square around the face or longer at the back. Whatever curl you have, there is a version to suit you. It all comes down to the layering," he adds.

6. '90s Bob

"Anything with a '90s vibe is still huge for 2022. Therefore, centre partings and boy bobs will still be in demand," predicts Percival. "When talking to your stylist about getting this look, make sure there is no graduation to the style. You want the bob to be completely square and straight, not higher at the back. It's all about sharp, sharp lines," he says.

"If the hair is heavy, you can soften the outline by texturizing through the ends," says Percival. "A great product to style this look is Percy & Reed Hold It Right There! Define & Hold Finish Cream. 7. Liquid Hair

Whether it be wet-look or super-glossy lengths, shine will be taken to new lengths in A/W 22. "This trend is stunning, and we saw models at the Fendi show sporting wet hair," says Maddocks. But if the wet look has you feeling fearful, you can still tap into the trend in a subtler way. "At home, I would blow-dry sleek and use a shine spray to give that stunning high-gloss finish," suggests Maddocks.

8. Bronzed Wood

"Shades of brown dominated A/W 22 fashion week, [with] designers such as Chloé, Chanel and ACNE Studios displaying the versatility and richness of this hue," says Wella Professionals digital craft expert Jordanna Cobella. "Bronzed Wood is a mixture of subtle caramel hues with darker neutral tones running throughout the hair. Think muted, multidimensional hues that add depth and movement to the hair," she says. What really makes the Bronzed Wood shade is the luxurious shine, making the colour look rich and luxurious.

9. Tweed Blonde

Much like the intertwining colours found in tweed, Tweed Blonde sees multiple shades of blonde weaved through the lengths of the hair for a multidimensional feel. "After periods of uncertainty, people tend to embrace warmer, richer tones that are nourishing and optimistic. We're seeing this trend transfer across to hair, with clients embracing warm golden honeycomb tones post-pandemic," says Cobella. "The beige-blonde trend has embraced a warmer palette with highs and lows of nude, beige and sandy tones. These warmer tones tend to reflect light more than ashier hues so will help the appearance of shine on the hair."
