The Knitwear Trends I'd Happily Live In for the Next Six Months
As we're spending more time indoors and at home this year, many of us are prioritising comfort and ease when getting dressed, and this will have a significant impact on the trends for autumn and winter 2020 and beyond. Loungewear will continue to be a growing category this year. However, fashion buyers I have spoken to expect that instead of joggers, hoodies and sweatshirts, there will be a demand for more elevated options, with knitted co-ords and layered separates being key sellers.
"Leisurewear will continue to grow but in a modern way from brands such as Les Tien," says Liane Wiggins, head of womenswear buying at MatchesFashion. The knitted dress is set to be a hero buy for autumn, as designers such as Jil Sander and Jacquemus have created beautiful formfitting knitted dresses. Last year, Katie Holmes made knitted co-ords go viral thanks to her bra-digan set, and you can certainly see the impact of this iconic outfit in new-in sections, as many brands have created knitted tops and matching cardigans. Other trending knitwear options included ribbed knit tops, embroidered cardigans and knitted trousers that are so comfortable you might struggle to ever take them off. Keep scrolling to see the 10 autumn knitwear looks we love.
1. Knitted Dresses
Knitted dresses are certainly the most popular dress trend this autumn. We particularly love Joseph's two-tone midi below.
2. Collars
This little detail makes simple cardigans and jumpers look more interesting.
3. Knitted Vests
Knitted vests have been given a decidedly fashionable makeover of late. The item was seen on the runways of Dior, Prada and Lacoste during the A/W 20 runway shows and has appeared in collections by buzzy brands including Ganni. From oversize cable-knit styles to patterned iterations with contrast-colour trim, these are certainly not the same sweater vests you might remember from the '90s.
4. Knitted Trousers
Trust us—these are even more comfortable than jogging bottoms. We love the Joseph knitted flares that are paired with a matching tank and knit bag.
5. Zip-Front Jumpers
This was another jumper that was popular last year and is a hero piece in Jacquemus's autumn collection.
6. Cropped Knits
Cropped, body-skimming knitwear is another '90s trend that's making a comeback. Pair with high-waisted denim for a Rachel Green look.
7. Ribbed Knit Tops
This is perfect for wearing at home and then to layer under chunkier knits as the weather cools.
8. Square Necklines
Many of the coolest knits this year all have a boxy, square neckline combined with long sleeves.
