The Autumn Microtrends Putting Smiles on Our Faces This September
Microtrend is a somewhat slippery fashion term that can be translated in myriad ways. My issue with it is that, historically, it has been just another way of describing those flash-in-the-pan trends that are here today and gone tomorrow. Not exactly the most sustainable attitude towards dressing. However, I've been thinking about it, and I've come up with a new definition for the microtrend for the season ahead: Essentially, they're the sort of items that catch your eye on Instagram, such as a chic silhouette, unusual print or eye-catching colour. They don't typically fit within the broad categorisation of seasonal trends. Rather, they speak to you personally and, more often than not, put a smile on your face.
I asked round the Who What Wear team and came up with eight of these microtrends that have been bringing personality to our Instagram feeds this season. And no, I'm not saying that you have to buy into each one, or any of them for that matter. After all, it's all about what brings you joy this autumn. Hopefully, they can spark inspiration for your own style explorations. For example, one of mine is intricate embroidery, and I've seen so many vintage creations making their way on to Instagram's best dressed, and they never fail to put a smile on my face.
Other highlights include dramatic, full-length cardigans; throwback floral prints; and autumnal rust shades. What are the microtrends giving you life this season? Scroll down to see what we're loving right now.
