I'm a Fashion Writer on a Budget—5 Spring Trends I Found for Cheap-ish
As a fashion writer, I constantly come across pieces I absolutely love, but I definitely cannot afford to be cashing out every time that happens. The constant battle between splurge and save is something I'm likely going to deal with for the rest of my life—a problem I've partially resolved by becoming adept at budget shopping. Figuring out where I can save has freed me from investing in a lot of potentially regretful purchases and ephemeral trends.
If the runways are any indication, we'll all be wearing bright colors, chunky textures, and statement pieces this spring, and I am so ready to take part in it all. The past couple of years have been tough, so I'm looking to welcome a lighter, more fun energy into my life and wardrobe. Below are five spring trends I'm looking forward to, including statement sunglasses that make every outfit look so much cooler and semi-sheer pieces that invite you in. The best part is that everything is under $100, so you don't have to overthink it. See you in the streets.
Matching Sets
Matching sets are truly undefeated when it comes to making your life look all the way pulled-together. They take little to no mind space to style, either, which makes them a winner in my book. Pro tip: Pack a few different matching sets in your carry-on to mix and match on vacation.
Shop matching sets:
This knit set is so sweet and timeless. You can also easily wear these pieces as separates.
Shop the matching Drawstring Shorts ($54).
Saturated hues like this royal blue provide an instant boost.
Shop the matching Straight Neck Bustier ($50).
Bougie-auntie vibes.
Shop the matching Chain Print Shirt ($60).
Easy, breezy.
Shop the matching Satin Shirt ($80).
This pattern is giving art deco Palm Springs, and I'm here for it.
Shop Flowy Printed Blouse ($60).
Statement Sunglasses
So much opportunity was unlocked once I discovered the potential of statement sunglasses. Whether you're more of a wire-frame type of girl or gravitate toward the sporty styles that are currently trending, there's no denying that a cool pair of sunnies takes things up a notch or two.
Shop statement sunglasses:
The phrase "she sees life through rose-colored glasses" is no coincidence. These are proven mood boosters.
Semi-Sheer Clothes
Whether it be crochet, transparent fabrics, or cutouts, the semi-sheer trend has hit the market in a big way this year. I love how suggestive these pieces can be and can't wait to try out all the variations of the trend.
Shop semi-sheer pieces:
The transparent sleeves make this button-down so much more chill.
Platform Flats
As a Dr. Martens stan, I actually get sad when it no longer is weather appropriate to step out in my combat boots. Platform flats provide that same weighty, grounded feel for warmer temps. If you're feeling bold, play with colored socks to finish the look.
Shop platform flats:
I love the sunken sole. It reminds me of those sunken living rooms from the '60s.
Column Skirts
Shop column skirts:
The column skirt is fast replacing the pencil skirt, and we are all so thankful. While the idea is similar, the column skirt looks so much more buttoned-up and, frankly, chic. I favor maxi silhouettes that hit just below the calf or just above the heel. Posh Spice would definitely approve.
A sleek white column skirt can be dressed up for formal events or dressed down with a sweater and tall boots.
