A Hairstylist Taught Me How to Do Perfect Waves in 5 Minutes

Finding a hairstyle I like is easy, but figuring out how to bring it to life? Not so much. You’d think a quick Google search would help, but when I type "how to create beachy waves,” there are legit over 300,000 results. It’s overwhelming to say the least, especially when it feels like I have zero time to do anything. So, I made an appointment at the Dyson Blown-Away Hair Bar at The Lineup, Who What Wear’s first beauty pop-up, and tapped a pro to show me how to get the perfect waves using the Dyson Airwrap™ styler. Let’s just say my friends have major hair envy now.
First things first: I arrived with slightly damp hair (and used some Bumble and Bumble Styling Creme) because the Dyson Airwrap™ styler dries as it styles—the most genius invention for a lazy hair girl like me. Before starting, the stylist sectioned and clipped my hair. Then she added the 1.6 inch barrel and began.
It’s hard to see in any of the pictures but the barrel has arrows on it, and you want to manually wrap the hair around it in the same direction as those arrows. But the key to getting beachy waves is to hold the ends away from the barrel. Once the piece of hair is dry, push the cold shot to set the curl, turn it off, and release the curl.
Lightly tug on the curl and repeat the previous steps alternating the barrel directions as you go.
Once done, tousle your hair and, if you want, add a light-hold hairspray to keep everything in place. It’s that easy. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy that the holidays are here because the Dyson Airwrap™ styler is now at the top of my list.
