Remember Color-Blocking? Here's How to Do It for Spring 2017

Can’t wait to try out spring’s trends? We’re right there with you. Taking cues from the S/S 17 runways, we’re especially excited to adopt more color into our wardrobes—and lots of it. We’re not just talking about adding a bright coat or bag as a stand-alone statement; we’re talking about mixing shades together in some unexpected ways. Know where we’re going with this?
That’s right: color-blocking. It’s been around for so long that it’s now part of the fashion vernacular, but that’s not to say it doesn’t wax and wane in popularity. For spring, it’s taking center stage again by moving away from its traditional form, which uses coordinating pieces in contrasting tones from opposite sides of the color wheel. By way of brands like Boden, this season’s subtler take on the trend favors simple silhouettes with bold primary hues that can be mixed and matched in a way that’s street style–approved. Don’t be confused though; color-blocking isn’t just for the sartorially brave. Wearing a look in energizing colors can be a great confidence booster—and who doesn’t like that?
At a loss as to where to begin? Scroll down for three different ways to make the trend your own.
Tonal Color-Blocking
If you’d consider your style to be adventurous, try tonal color-blocking. This take on the trend makes it a little less scary than what it once was (read: when full-blown clashing was a thing). For spring, soft pinks and reds (from cherry to burgundy) is the season’s winning color combo, and this outfit is proof. See how the pink top adds more depth to the red skirt-and-blazer combo?
Head-to-Toe Monochrome
Love color but want a simple take on the trend? Color-blocking doesn’t have to mean all bright all the time—you can experiment with muted hues. Wear a dress in one bold primary color, and accessorize with neutrals or metallics (aka the new neutrals). Metallic accessories have a way of making a modest look feel fresh and modern.
Toned Back With Denim
If your closet is dominated by neutrals, bravely venture outside of your normal palette by layering in a single pop of color—it’ll give you instant style cred. But color-blocking doesn’t mean forgetting about your staples either: Denim is the perfect way to tone down the trend and make it feel more wearable.
